Beginner Quilt Projects

Any time you’re learning something new, it’s always best to take baby steps as opposed to trying to do a marathon on your first day. This same principle applies to quilting and veterans recommend starting out with a simple project such as a placement, pillow, or oven pad.

As you get started in quilting, a placemat is a great project to help you learn the basics.

Investing in the right tools also can increase a newcomer’s chance of success. Some necessities include wide quilting rulers, a cutting mat, a rotary cutter, and tons of straight pins. Basting also can really help with accurate piecing, even though it takes more time.

What you want to avoid is thinking everything is cut out and ready to go and then when you start stitching a row, the pieces don’t fit together. Then you have to rip it out and re-do it.
